Hasegawa 1/48 Messerschmitt Bf 109G-14 (09148/Jt48)
This was another bagged kit that was part of a lot I bought from a guy on one of the forums.
Like most of my recent builds, I wanted to try something different with this kit. I primed with Tamiya Grey Primer from the 40 ml jar, thinned with Mr. Color Leveling Thinner, which went on very well. The RLM 04 yellow is AMMO Gold Yellow. The bottom is my RLM 76 mix: XF-23:1 and XF-2:1 and the top is straight XF-2. I thinned with 99% isopropyl alcohol, rather than the 91% I usually use. The bottom sprayed fine, but the top stayed sticky for over 24 hours, an experience I've never had with Tamiya paint before. I sprayed a second coat of XF-2 thinned with the usual 91% IPA, and it was fine.
I was going to use the kit decals, but they did not want to come off the sheet. I had already painted the kit, so I had to find an aftermarket set of the same subject. Fortunately, the same subject is on EagleCals #36, listed as a G-6. The decal notes say that this plane might have been a G-14. I had to get one pair of insignia from Aeromaster 48-020. I'm not sure if the insignia is 100% accurate.
I had some trouble applying the tulips around the nose. They come in two pieces, white and black. You apply the white ones, let them dry, then put the black on top of them. The trouble is, the black one should meet at the front, so the white ones need to overlap a little bit. I neglected to do this. The kit decals don't have any white - which really didn't show up, since the top is painted white anyway. If I were to build this subject again, I probably won't bother to apply the white background.
