boxart

This was another of the bagged 109's that I bought a number of years ago. (I'm getting down to the bottom of the barrel. I bought seventeen, and I think I have two or three left.) I decided to do the scheme shown on the box art.

Most of the kit fit together well, but I had to use a little putty around the cowling.

The bottom was painted with my Tamiya mix for RLM 76, namely XF-23:1 + XF-2:1. The top is a combination of RLM 70 Black Green, RLM 02 Gray Green, and a light brown. Hasegawa recommends Mr. Color C-321 Brown for the light brown. I didn't have any, and didn't want to buy it just for this subject, so I used XF-59 Desert Yellow. I thought it turned out well. The RLM 70 is AMMO and the RLM 02 is Model Air. The RLM 04 under the cowling is AMMO Gold Yellow. I masked everything, as the box art and the kit instructions show hard edges.

After applying a gloss coat of Quick Shine, I applied the kit decals. They worked very well, although there is quite a bit of silvering on the starboard chevron. Another coat of Quick Shine was followed by Micro Flat. I used the Eduard mask (EX018) for the canopy. This particular mask also includes masks for the 109F, which I have in the stash.
